Royal Deeside & The Cairngorm National Park

Royal Deeside is an exceptionally beautiful part of the Scottish Highlands with plenty to see and do.  Less than 1 mile away are Balmoral Castle, Crathie Church, & the local whisky distillery (Royal Lochnagar). Albert's Cairn, a magnificent pyramid built by Queen Victoria in memory of Prince Albert, can also be visited by foot.  Braemar Castle welcomes visitors and is a 10 minute drive to the west.

The best of Scotland's Highland Games (Aboyne, Braemar, Lonach and Ballater) are all within half an hour's drive. There are also many beautiful gardens to visit in the area. A short drive of 8 miles towards the east brings you to the picturesque village of Ballater with its many shops boasting Royal Warrants..  And 9 miles to the west is Braemar, the location of Highland Games attended by the Queen annually.  There are many wonderful walks and trails in the area - recommended walks include those around the spectacular Loch Muick, Linn of Dee and Linn of Quoich.  A walk through the ancient Ballochbuie forest through to the Garrawalt falls is a must - parking is available at Keiloch.

As well as fishing and shooting over the Invercauld, Balmoral and Mar Estates, the area is perfect for hillwalkers, mountain climbers and mountain bikers. During the winter months, snow sports enthusiasts are able to take advantage of the cottage's close proximity to the Lecht Ski Centre and Glenshee Ski Centre, both of which are less than half an hour's drive away.

Next to Knock Cottage is the Knock Gallery which shows the work of modern Central European and Scottish artists. It always has a lively, colourful and diverse collection of handsomely framed oil paintings, acrylics, etchings and engravings, available at a wide variety of prices. In addition, the gallery has an extensive collection of the work of the best Polish and Lithuanian silversmiths working with Baltic amber to produce unique pieces of jewellery.
